Washington's position has changed.
The USA is considering the option of strengthening military assistance to Ukraine, but the issue of transferring long-range missiles remains open. Analysts warn that it is not only about the limited stockpiles of high-tech weapons, but also about the risk of an escalation of the war. This writes Reuters.
Kiev has asked Washington to transfer Tomahawk cruise missiles capable of covering a distance of up to 2,500 kilometers. Such weapons would allow strikes deep into Russian territory, including Moscow. The US stresses that the number of such missiles is limited and their use is considered in a wider range of defense tasks.
Possible replacement options
American officials note that the Ukrainian Armed Forces already have systems capable of attacking ground targets. As one of the options, they consider transferring shorter-range missiles or engaging European allies who could purchase modern weapons and transfer them to Kiev.
Change in the U.S. position
There has been a recent correction in rhetoric in Washington. Donald Trump has said that the Ukrainian army can regain control of occupied territories, while he has called the Russian army a "paper tiger." One of the consequences of this change was the decision to help Kiev select targets for strikes on Russia's energy infrastructure.
Russian reaction and production data
The Kremlin warned that the possible delivery of Tomahawk to Ukraine would be another step toward escalating the confrontation with the West. According to the Pentagon, the US has purchased nearly 9,000 such missiles since the mid-1980s. In recent years, their production amounted to 55-90 units per year, and it is planned to purchase 57 more in 2026.
