U.S. military experts are urging allies to take decisive action.
Amid growing incidents with Russian planes and drones near the alliance's borders, U.S. military experts are urging NATO to take decisive action. According to CEPA experts, without clear rules and readiness to apply them, the deterrence system risks collapsing, writes CEPA (translated by Charter97.org).
In September and early October, airspace violations were recorded almost daily in Poland, Romania, the Baltic States and Scandinavia. For example, on September 9, more than 20 Russian drones invaded Poland, and on September 19, three MiG-31s entered Estonian airspace, ignoring signals from Italian F-35s. Similar cases have also been reported in Norway.
"Simply making statements is not enough. They need to be backed up with concrete military steps and long-term support for Ukraine and eastern allies," says former US Security Council official Jason Israel.
Retired Major General Gordon Davis notes: "Drones should be destroyed immediately, manned vehicles should be preempted and destroyed if necessary."
U.S. Navy Admiral Andrew Lewis emphasizes that NATO must have an instant response force: "If the alliance does not make a clear decision, it will only encourage Russia."
Some experts, including some who believe that the response should also utilize information campaigns aimed at undermining citizen confidence inside Russia.
Lieutenant General Lance Landrum says the main threat is that NATO statements without real action will be seen as hollow. "Putin will press until he meets confident resistance," he notes.
The experts' conclusion is unambiguous - deterrence is possible only when Moscow is confident in NATO's readiness to act.
