Video taken at the time of the explosion around 9:30 p.m. shows the flash of a fireball amid a sustained roar. The flames diminished significantly over the next hour, though the fire near the south end of the plant continued to burn.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly Mitchell told KCAL-TV that the fire is largely contained.
She said there were no reports of injuries and "no cause for alarm in the surrounding area." Officials continue to monitor air quality and advise nearby residents to stay home if possible.
El Segundo Mayor Chris Pimentel added that the fire has not traveled beyond the plant site, all personnel are accounted for and the cause of the fire is not yet known. Puffs of smoke were visible in the El Segundo and South Bay neighborhoods, with firefighters bombarding the flames with jets of water. The plant has its own fire department, and regional agencies assisted in the response.
What residents saw
Residents in nearby neighborhoods describe a large explosion and smoke rising over the city. In Redondo Beach, smoke billowed across an orange sky and traffic was diverted, with roads closed along Rosekrans Avenue and Pacific Coast.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom were informed of the incident.
Bass said there were no known impacts to Los Angeles International Airport. The governor's office is coordinating with local and state agencies to keep the community safe.
It is noted that refinery fires are part of life in the South Bay, which is home to several large oil producers.
In 2022, it took firefighters two hours to put out a fire at the El Segundo refinery. In 2020, a fire at Marathon Petroleum's Carson plant raised flames at least 30 meters, but was brought under control and caused minor damage to plant operations.
