Ukraine Attacked Sochi With Drones During Putin's Visit

The city's airport has been shut down.

Late in the evening of October 2, Ukrainian drones attacked Sochi, where President Vladimir Putin had finished his speech at a plenary session of the Valdai Forum shortly before the raid began. Airports in Sochi and Gelendzhik were closed around 10:30 p.m. (the same time as in Minsk); half an hour later, Sochi Mayor Andrey Proshunin announced the threat of drone attacks on the city, writes The Moscow Times.

Locals told Shot of air defense systems firing shots over the Black Sea and explosions amid a roaring siren. Also reporting the threat of UAV attacks on the federal territory of Sirius was its head Dmitri Plishkin. "All forces and means are ready to repel it. Please remain calm, move away from the windows and take shelter in a safe place," the official wrote in his Telegram channel.

According to reports from the Russian Defense Ministry, from 21:30 on October 2 to 07:00 on October 3, air defense and REB forces eliminated 11 Ukrainian drones over the waters of the Black Sea and 4 more targets in Crimea. The drone threat in Sirius and Sochi was lifted about 30-40 minutes after the start of the AFU drone raids. At the same time, restrictions at the airports of Sochi and Gelendzhik lasted seven hours.

"During the period of restrictions, 10 airplanes flying to Sochi "left" for alternate airfields," Rosaviatsia reported. For example, one of the airliners from Moscow to Sochi landed in Grozny. According to the Association of Tour Operators of the Russian Federation (ATOR), by Friday morning more than 40 flights were delayed at Sochi airport - 24 for departure and about 20 for arrival. The introduced "Cover" plan "led to significant flight delays," ATOR noted.

On Thursday, Putin spoke at a plenary session of the Valdai Club in Sochi. His speech, as well as a question-and-answer block, lasted nearly four hours and ended around 22:00.
