There's been a tectonic shift.
Putin appears to have overflowed the cup of patience of key advisers to the administration of US President Donald Trump.
A "tectonic shift" in the White House chief's inner circle regarding the situation in Ukraine has taken place, the Financial Times reports, citing an official familiar with the matter.
The publication's sources say it is the sharp turn in Washington's position that explains the US decision to provide Ukraine with intelligence for strikes on Russian energy infrastructure. As a result, five major refineries were shut down in the country in September alone, and gasoline shortages covered regions from the Far East to the center.
In the meantime, public statements by representatives of Donald Trump's administration are becoming increasingly harsh. On September 15, the president's special envoy Keith Kellogg said the U.S. Army would "kick the ass" of the Russian military. A week later, Trump himself called Russia a "paper tiger" with serious economic problems. He said Russia has been "fighting aimlessly for three and a half years now in a conflict that the Real Military Power should have won in less than a week." In addition, he called Dmitry Medvedev, who a month earlier had threatened the US with nuclear weapons, a "fool".
Vladimir Putin, by contrast, shows disregard for these statements. "The denial of reality in Putin's performance has already acquired a fierce character," said political analyst Abbas Galliamov. In his speech at the Valdai Club on October 2, Putin praised the U.S. administration for its "rational approach," lack of hypocrisy and ability to defend interests, while blaming Europe, which he said "constantly escalates the conflict," for the continuation of the war.
"Objectively, things are getting worse for Putin: there are no military victories, the economy is sliding into crisis, society is tired, and the AFU is repeatedly disabling Russian oil refineries. Even Trump has toughened his rhetoric," Galliamov notes. According to him, Putin's main task remains to demonstrate his inflexibility: "Everyone should see that he has lied before and continues to lie."
