European Diplomats Came To Kuropaty

To honor the memory of repressed Belarusians.

German Chargé d'Affaires in Belarus Catherine aus dem Ziepen along with representatives of other embassies visited Kuropaty on October 30 and commemorated the victims of Stalinist repressions, the German Embassy in Belarus reported.

"On the night of October 29-30, 1937 in Minsk, the Soviet People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs (NKVD) shot many intellectuals, including many poets and writers. Their bodies were buried in the Kuropaty tract on the outskirts of Minsk. "Night of the Shot Poets" became a tragic culmination of a series of crimes committed against the nationally oriented intelligentsia of Belarus. It is estimated that between 1937 and 1941, up to 250,000 people were killed and buried in Kuropaty alone.

Every year many Belarusians honor the memory of Belarusian cultural figures killed on the night of October 29-30, 1937.

The memory of them is preserved and honored in Germany. In particular, yesterday the Berlin Literary Colloquium held an event "Night of Unshot Poems" dedicated to the cultural and literary history of Belarus,"," the report says.
