Politico: Belgian Defense Minister Publicly Quarrels With Medvedev

Theo Franken published an Instagram post to a Selena Gomez song.

Belgian Defense Minister Theo Franken got into an altercation with former Russian President Dmitri Medvedev over nuclear weapons - and did so on Instagram to Selena Gomez's song "Calm Down," writes Politico (translated by Charter97.org).

Earlier in the week, Franken said in an interview with the Belgian publication HUMO that NATO would "crush Moscow" if the Kremlin ever attacked Brussels. The remarks drew a sharp reaction from Medvedev, who is known for his harsh remarks on social media. The former Russian leader called the Belgian minister an "idiot" and emphasized that the recently tested Poseidon nuclear weapon is a "true doomsday weapon." Medvedev responded to the comment that Belgium could become a "testing ground," saying, "Then Belgium will disappear."

In response, Franken published an Instagram post calling Medvedev "the country's main bully" who "never stops threatening and insulting." He emphasized that NATO "is not waging war with Russia and certainly does not want to," but the principle of "strike back" has remained unshaken for 76 years.

The post was accompanied by Selena Gomez's song "Calm Down," which looks like a kind of call by the Belgian minister to the Kremlin to "calm down." The song was first released in 2022, performed by Nigerian singer Rema, and a remix with Gomez appeared in 2023.
