Colombian President's Plane Could Not Be Refueled Because Of U.S. Sanctions

At Madrid airport, all companies denied him jet fuel.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro's plane refused to refuel in Spain because of U.S. sanctions.

The Spanish publication El Pais reported.

While flying to Saudi Arabia, Colombian President Gustavo Petro's Boeing 737-700 made a technical stop at Madrid's Barajas Airport to refuel.

But all companies refused him jet fuel because they feared being hit by U.S. sanctions. They were imposed against Petro for "involvement in drug trafficking."

As a result, the presidential jet was forced to seek alternative refueling options.

In the end, with the help of the Spanish government, the plane was transferred to a military airbase where it was able to refuel, Spanish media reported, citing its own sources.

Colombian authorities viewed the incident as "unacceptable" and posed security risks to the delegation.

Sanctions against Colombia's president

Last week, Gustavo Petro was added to the so-called OFAC list, a directory of individuals the United States accuses of having ties to drug trafficking. The U.S. Treasury Department holds him responsible for the increase in cocaine production in Colombia .

Gustavo Petro denies the allegations.

At the same time, his wife Veronica Alcocer, his eldest son Nicolas Petro Burgosa and Interior Minister Armando Benedetti were added to the list.

The Colombian government called the placement of the president and his family on the sanctions list "an offensive event that violates honor and dignity."
