The U.S. has backed out of the Budapest summit.
The United States has canceled President Donald Trump's meeting in Budapest with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin after receiving "tough demands" from Russia on Ukraine.
This is reported by Financial Times.
The publication's sources claim that Moscow's position was too tough and this did not suit Washington.
It is also reported that the decision to cancel the previously scheduled bilateral summit was made after a "tense" phone call at the highest diplomatic level.
What preceded
On October 16, Trump and Putin said after a phone call that they were ready to meet within the next two weeks. The capital of Hungary was chosen as the venue for the bilateral summit.
It was to be prepared by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, but Trump soon canceled the summit.
According to media reports, Russia has not changed its maximalist demands on the issue of ending the war in Ukraine. At the same time, Trump himself publicly said that he "doesn't want to waste his time."
In addition, on the night of October 23, the United States imposed sanctions against the largest oil companies of the aggressor country, Rosneft and Lukoil. The US Treasury Department also called on Russia to immediately agree to a ceasefire.
