Trump Is Preparing Strikes On Venezuela's Airfields And Ports
Donald Trump

The goals have already been set.

President President Donald Trump's administration intends to increase pressure on Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, whom Washington accuses of organizing drug trafficking to the United States. Informed U.S. officials told The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) that the White House is preparing airstrikes against a number of targets in Venezuela to do so, including sites "within the sphere of influence of drug cartels and the Maduro regime."

An official said the targets in question include Venezuelan naval bases and airfields, including airstrips believed to be used for drug trafficking. According to the interlocutors, Trump, who announced strikes on ground targets in Venezuela a week ago, has not yet made a final decision on such attacks, but the targets have already been identified.

"President Trump has made it clear to Maduro: stop sending drugs and criminals into our country. The president is ready to use every resource America has to stop the flow of drugs," said White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly.

The Venezuelan army has modern air defense (air defense) equipment, including a significant number of Russian systems, the WSJ noted. The authorities have also presumably received four to six Russian S-300 SAMs, as well as man-portable anti-aircraft guns, which experts say are potentially capable of detecting and shooting down U.S. warplanes. US aircraft have recently stepped up flights near Venezuela's borders to map its air defense systems, the publication reported.

Last week, Maduro said Venezuela has about 5,000 Russian-made Igla-S man-portable SAMs. He said they are deployed "at key air defense positions." According to flight tracking services, a Russian military plane, which is under US sanctions, arrived in Caracas last weekend.

Since early September, the US military has carried out a series of strikes against suspected drug ships in the Caribbean Sea. About 40 people have died as a result. The Pentagon says some of those killed were Venezuelan nationals. Last week, Trump sent an aircraft carrier group escorted by strike ships to the Caribbean.

Ahead of possible strikes on land targets, the Trump administration has launched a campaign aimed at portraying Maduro as the head of a drug trafficking and terrorist organization seeking to flood the US with drugs. Venezuela's leader denies the allegations and says the US wants to seize the country's natural wealth, including oil, gas and gold. He also announced the mobilization of 15,000 soldiers.
