Belgium Detains Suspects In Preparation Of Terrorist Attack Against Prime Minister

The attack was prepared by three young men.

Three young men have been detained in Belgium on suspicion of planning a terror attack using explosives mounted on drones, AFP reports.

"Some elements indicate that the suspects intended to carry out a jihadist-inspired terrorist attack against political figures," federal prosecutor Ann Fransen said.

The target included Prime Minister Bart De Wever, Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prévost said, De Standaard reports. In X, the politician said the news of the preparations for the attack was shocking and expressed support for De Wever.

Three people born in 2001, 2002 and 2007 were detained. The first was later released. De Standaard writes that among those remaining in custody is a man of Chechen origin.

The detentions took place in Antwerp. During the searches, law enforcers found "an improvised device - potentially explosive but not yet ready for use - as well as a bag with metal balls," Fransen said, and a 3D printer "which is believed to have been intended for the manufacture of components to carry out an attack," particularly a drone, the prosecutor said.
