The purpose of the visit became known.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe made a short trip to Brussels this week, meeting with senior EU foreign and intelligence officials to discuss the intelligence-sharing situation.

According to sources Politico, Ratcliffe met with the EU's chief diplomat Kaya Kallas, as well as senior officials from the EU's Intelligence and Situation Analysis Center and the Intelligence Directorate of the EU military headquarters.

"Two sources said the purpose of the meeting was to reassure the public and reaffirm Washington's commitment to intelligence sharing as some European capitals grow increasingly worried about the direction of US foreign policy under President Donald Trump," the publication wrote.

Officially, Ratcliffe was in town to brief the North Atlantic Council, one diplomat said. But his meeting with the European External Action Service (EEAS), which is responsible for the bloc's foreign policy, "sent a clear signal: the CIA wants to keep in touch."

The meeting is not expected to be a one-off. "It should be a regular one from now on," one official said. Ratcliffe and his EU counterparts also discussed common concerns, including Russia, China and the Middle East.
