Germany Has Introduced New Rules For Military Service

Registration is mandatory, service is voluntary.

Germany's ruling coalition has agreed on a reform of military service.

According to Reuters.

The new compromise version, agreed by the coalition parties, would make registration and medical examinations mandatory for all men aged 18 and over. It would also make it mandatory for all men to fill out a questionnaire detailing their readiness to serve.

From January 1, 2026, Germany will require all men to register for potential military service. However, military service will initially remain voluntary, provided enough men agree to volunteer.

The German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius recalled that Europe relies on Germany "not only for finances, weapons and procurement, but also for personnel."

After the agreement on military service reform by the ruling coalition parties, the head of the Defense Ministry expressed confidence "that everything will be fine" and again called voluntary service an "attractive" concept.

Military obligation by necessity

If the required number of soldiers is not reached through volunteers, the German parliament may introduce so-called "military obligation by necessity."

"This means that if compulsory military service is introduced, a whole range of criteria will be applied in the selection of conscripts," Pistorius said.

The grounds for exemption from conscription include: having two brothers who do basic military service, police work, service in civil defense, conscientious objection.

By 2035, the size of the German Armed Forces should grow to 260,000 soldiers (that's 80,000 more than now), and reservists to 200,000. If this goal is not achieved, compulsory military service will be reinstated, for which a separate law will have to be passed.
