Stubb: Kremlin Made A Strategic Mistake With Trump
Alexander Stubb

The Russians missed an important opportunity in Budapest.

Canceling the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in Budapest is a strategic mistake for Russia.

Finland President Alexander Stubb said this in an interview with Associated Press.

The decision to cancel the meeting between Trump and Putin came after a phone call between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Stubb noted that during that conversation, Rubio likely realized that "the Russians did not concede one iota," meaning "there was no point in putting President Trump in a situation where he would not get an agreement or anything else."

"The cancellation of the meeting was another example of a strategic mistake by the Russians. They had an opportunity and they missed it," the Finnish president emphasized.

Stubb also noted that for him, playing golf was a "doorway" that helped him connect with Trump.

He believes that although Trump and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky have a "tumultuous relationship," he and other European leaders can help be a bridge between them.

"We translate President Trump to President Zelensky and vice versa," the Finnish president added.

He believes that when it comes to Putin, only one person should have direct and public talks with him, and that is Trump.

Stubb also believes that the EU is unlikely to open a direct channel of communication with Putin anytime soon.
