Two North Korean prisoners of war who fought on Russia's side have asked to be handed over to South Korea.
This is reported by Deutsche Welle.
Two North Korean servicemen captured in Ukraine said during an interview for a documentary that they wanted to go to South Korea.
The conversation took place on October 28 in Kiev, where the captives are under Ukrainian control.
The interview was coordinated by South Korean human rights organization Gyeore-eol Nation United. According to its data, one of the soldiers had previously made a similar request when a representative of the Republic of Korea's parliament visited him in February.
South Korean and Western intelligence agencies estimate that about 10,000 North Korean soldiers could be sent to Ukraine in 2024 to support Russian troops.
South Korean intelligence also reported that DPRK soldiers are often ordered to lay hands on themselves to avoid capture. If wounded, they self-detonate with grenades.
In September, the South Korean intelligence service said that about 2,000 North Korean military personnel sent to help Russia had died as a result of fighting in Ukraine.
As previously reported, on January 11 this year it became known that Ukrainian defenders had captured two North Korean military personnel in the Kursk region. One of them was captured on January 9.
