French General Urged The Country To Prepare For War With Russia

France's Chief of the General Staff said that there was a need for community mobilization.

A fiery call by the new chief of staff of France's armed forces for mayors to prepare their constituents for a possible war with Russia has drawn swift condemnation from major political parties, Politico reports.

Speaking at the annual meeting of French mayors in Paris on Tuesday, General Fabien Mandon urged local officials to prepare citizens for the fact that they may have to "accept suffering to protect who we are."

"We have all the knowledge, all the economic and demographic power to contain the Moscow regime," Mandon said.

But he added that if France "is not prepared to accept the loss of its children, the economic suffering because defense production will be prioritized, then we will be in danger."

Politico writes that parties from both ends of the political spectrum, which together represent a significant portion of the electorate, have come out against it, highlighting the lack of consensus in France on the need to prepare for war, as well as divergent assessments of how much of a threat Russia poses to the French homeland. Many NATO countries speculate that Moscow could somehow attack the alliance before 2030.

The leader of the extreme left, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who has run for president three times, expressed his "total disagreement" with Mandon in a post on X and said Mandon should not "assume the sacrifices that could result from our diplomatic failures."

"Unconquered France" and the National Front, which according to the latest polls could face off in the second round of the presidential election, want France to withdraw from NATO's integrated command. "Unconquered France" wants Paris out of the military alliance as soon as possible, while the "National Front" is willing to wait until Russia's war in Ukraine is over.
