Possible Escalation Points For Russia After The Incident In Poland Named

NATO must be prepared to take decisive action.

Tensions between Russia and NATO countries are rising again after an alleged sabotage on a Polish railroad. Amid accusations of Russian operations expanding beyond Ukraine, experts are highlighting several areas where conflict could erupt further, writes Dagens (translated by Charter97.org).

Moscow is suspected of involvement in a major railroad accident in Poland, which authorities are treating as possible sabotage. Analysts say it fits into Russia's broader strategy of probing vulnerabilities across Europe.

Putin has long said he wants to regain influence in the former Soviet Union. Russian troops are already present in Ukraine and Georgia, and rising tensions with the West have raised fears that the Kremlin could expand its actions.

Experts identify several possible hotbeds:

Poland is the main hotbed of risk.

Poland has faced repeated incidents. In September, a Russian missile crossed its border, prompting Warsaw to activate NATO's Article 4. The latest incident - damage to railroad tracks near the border with Ukraine - has heightened alarm.

Security expert Anthony Gliss said Russia is seeking to show its ability to disable Europe's critical infrastructure and undermine confidence in NATO. He warns: if Poland is perceived as a "weak link" by allies, it could trigger a wider escalation.

The Baltic states and Romania.

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania remain NATO's most vulnerable members. Despite fortified defenses, they regularly face provocations. The Mirror reported Russian planes violating Estonian airspace.

The Russian grouping in Kaliningrad is also a concern, and could become a point of future crisis.

Romania is also feeling the impact of the conflict. Russian drones have repeatedly approached its territory. The most serious episode occurred on Nov. 17, when a drone almost reached the border, attacking a tanker carrying fuel for Ukraine. Authorities have recognized the risk of further incidents and are preparing for possible threats.
