Lithuania Admits New Unilateral Border Closure With Belarus

This was reported by the Foreign Ministry of Belarus.

The Lithuanian authorities do not rule out the risk of a new unilateral closure of the border with Belarus - it could lead to serious consequences for both ordinary people and legal entities. This is reported by TASS with reference to the press secretary of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry Ruslan Varankov.

According to him, Vilnius' decision to reopen the border crossings Beniakoni - Shalchininkai and Kamenny Log - Miadininkai was taken in violation of the bilateral agreement, according to which the authorities of both countries should notify about such actions in advance (from 1 to 5 days). Varankov emphasized that Lithuania has thus again demonstrated disregard for international legal obligations.

"There is also a risk of a new unilateral closure of the border by Vilnius, which the Lithuanian authorities explicitly state. This is fraught with serious consequences for ordinary citizens and legal entities," he added.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman recalled that the decision to close the border in October was taken unilaterally by Lithuania. Vilnius explained this step by the frequent appearance of smuggling weather probes in the airspace of the country. In response, Lukashenka's regime banned trucks registered in Lithuania and Poland from traveling through its territory.
