Chinese And Indian Companies Reduce Operations With Russian Oil

Because of U.S. sanctions.

Chinese and Indian banks and refineries are taking steps to comply with U.S. sanctions against two major Russian oil companies.

This is reported by Reuters.

The publication cited a U.S. Treasury Department official.

"Many Chinese and Indian companies are aware of the sanctions and avoid the risk, recognize the importance of the relationship with the West, and seek to comply," the unnamed official told reporters during a phone call.

Reuters earlier wrote that Indian energy giant Reliance Industries completely stopped importing Russian oil from November 20.

This decision was made against the backdrop of tougher US, UK and EU sanctions against Russian oil companies - primarily Rosneft and Lukoil.

Reliance has a long-term contract with Rosneft for the purchase of about 500,000 barrels of oil per day. Despite this, the corporation has repeatedly emphasized that it will adhere to the sanctions imposed against Russia and comply with all international restrictions on the energy sector.

US sanctions

In October, the US imposed new sanctions against Russia. The restrictions targeted Rosneft and Lukoil and their numerous subsidiaries involved in oil and gas production, refining and sales in Russia.

The list included more than 30 units of both companies, including oil fields, gas and refineries across the country.

The sanctions are aimed at putting pressure on Russia's energy sector and limiting the revenues the Kremlin uses to finance the war and support the economy.

This has effectively forced other nations to reduce their purchases of Russian oil and stop working with Russia's two leading oil companies.
