Smuggled weather probes have once again disrupted Vilnius airport.
Meteosondes with contraband have again disrupted the work of Vilnius airport. In this regard, Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginenė reminded that if the situation worsens, the government may again decide to close the border, writes Delfi.
"Closing the border was a last resort, a response to the weather probes purposefully sent towards the airport. Today we see that we can open the borders, but we do not exclude the possibility of closing the borders again indefinitely if the situation changes for the worse. Meteosondes are our new reality, but by rearranging the algorithms, we can say we are closing airports less and less often," Ruginenė said on November 21.
"I made it clear yesterday and the day before yesterday: by opening or closing alone, we will not abruptly shut down the meteosondes. Every time we talk about this issue, there are many strategic actions," she said.
The Prime Minister said that the actions of law enforcement agencies are coordinated, Lithuania consults with international partners and works through diplomatic channels.
We will recall that on November 20, temporary airspace restrictions were again imposed over Vilnius airport for almost an hour "due to a possible balloon overflight." Because of this, among other things, the plane with the Lithuanian Foreign Minister and EU Commissioner on board could not land.
A month ago, October 29, Lithuania closed the border with Belarus in connection with the increasing number of incoming weather probes with contraband, which threatened the work of airports. On November 20, the work of the closed two border crossing points was resumed.
Lithuanian trucks, stuck in Belarus and forcibly sent to paid parking lots in our country, are still unable to return.
