Most of the cases involve women, children and the elderly.
The war in Ukraine, which has lasted for more than three and a half years, has led to an increase in the number of refugees from that country. About 10 million Ukrainians have fled their homes to escape the fighting and have become internally displaced or have been forced to leave the country. Such data the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) cited on Friday, November 21.
This year alone, 122 thousand people have fled the violence, the world organization pointed out. According to its information, most of them are women, children and the elderly from regions bordering the front lines. Since the beginning of the war, hundreds of thousands of servicemen and civilians have been killed or injured in Ukraine, OCHA added.
Thousands of residents of frontline regions are cut off from humanitarian aid
The UN emphasized the plight of those who have not left their homes. In the towns of Pokrovsk and Mirnograd in the Donetsk region, about 1,500 people, mostly elderly and disabled people, are still stranded and have no permanent access to water, electricity and medical care, OCHA emphasized. According to the UN office, about 3,000 people in the town of Liman are cut off from humanitarian aid due to the ongoing fighting.
Children are among the most vulnerable groups, the organization noted. Many minors have been repeatedly forcibly displaced and some have lived close to areas of fighting or have seen their schools, homes and hospitals destroyed, the UN added.
