Lithuanian Border Guards Intercepted 10 Weather Probes With Smuggled Cigarettes From Belarus In Two Days

Eight people have been detained.

Over the past two days, Lithuanian border guards intercepted 10 smuggled weather balloons, which contained about 12.3 thousand packs of Belarusian cigarettes. This was reported by the advisor of the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) Giedrius Misutis, writes the Lithuanian edition of Elta.

"For two days, 8 people were detained. 6 were detained for one day, the rest for the next. The court extended the detention of 6 detainees for a month, the issue of detention will still be decided," said Giedrius Misutis.

The detentions took place in Vilnius, Varena, Raseiniai and Kėdainiai districts. As usual in such cases, the contraband was equipped with GPS trackers and attached to weather probes.

According to the State Security Service, 115 people have been detained on suspicion of smuggling by air since the beginning of the year.

"In total, border guards have detained more than 1 million 340 thousand parcels arriving from Belarus this year. These statistics also include cargoes transported by drones, but, of course, most of them are transported by balloons," said the representative of the structure.
