A Supreme Court judge has indicated that the politician, who was under house arrest, could escape.
Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested. This was reported on Saturday, November 22, by German Wave, Reuters and Brazilian news portal G1.
The politician, convicted by Brazil's Supreme Court in September of attempting a coup d'état and sentenced to 27 years and 3 months in prison, had been under house arrest since August 4. The former head of state was in the process of appealing the verdict.
The arrest is a preventive measure and was requested by federal police. It was authorized after Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the ex-president's son, called for an overnight vigil outside the former head of state's home.
Supreme Court Judge Cited Escape Risk
Brazil's Supreme Court Justice Alesandre de Moraes cited an escape risk and said the call for the vigil "indicates a possible attempt to use" Bolsonaro supporters to obstruct the monitoring of house arrest. De Moraes also did not rule out a pretext to create riots.
At the time of the investigation, the accused planned to take refuge in the Argentine embassy and request political asylum, De Moraes recalled.
He added that the condominium where Bolsonaro was under house arrest was located about 13 kilometers from the embassy district in Brasilia, a distance that the judge said could be covered by car in less than 15 minutes.
Bolsonaro was arrested around 06:00 (12:00 MST) and was calm about the incident. Former first lady Michelle Bolsonaru was not at home.
After a series of standard procedures, Bolsonaru was taken to the federal police headquarters and placed in a room designated for the arrest of dignitaries. His medical examination was conducted on the spot.
De Moraes specified that Bolsonaro had used the social media accounts of his allies, including his three parliamentarian sons, to disseminate messages with "content clearly encouraging and inciting attacks on the Supreme Court and openly supporting foreign interference in the Brazilian judiciary."
Bolsonaro's conviction
Earlier on Sept. 12, four out of five judges voted to find Bolsonaro, 70, guilty of five crimes: participating in an armed criminal organization, attempting the violent overthrow of democracy, organizing a coup d'état and damaging state property and protected cultural property. One judge acquitted the former president.
As Reuters pointed out, the single judge's vote against opened the way for a challenge to the ruling and a potential final verdict closer to the 2026 presidential election.
The trial against the politician
Bolsonaro's supporters stormed Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace in the city of Brasilia on January 8, 2023, shortly after Luis Inacio Lula da Silva took office as president. The prosecution alleges that Jairo Bolsonaro was involved in developing plans for a coup d'état codenamed "Green and Yellow Daggers." The plans called for the poisoning of Lula, as well as the assassination of Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and Chief Justice de Moraes. Bolsonaro denies all the accusations and says he knew nothing about the coup plot.
In July, Bolsonaro was put on an electronic bracelet, ordered to stay at home at night and banned from using social media. In early August, the former president was sent to house arrest at his home in Brasilia for addressing supporters over an Internet link.
