High-level talks on the peace plan will begin today.
The European Union will also take part in talks in Geneva on the U.S. peace plan. The right-hand man of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen Bjorn Seibert will outline the EU's position.
The Politico reports.
A source told the publication that the EU and Britain will take part in high-level talks on US President Donald Trump's peace plan for Ukraine, which begin today.
It is noted that this will be a significant breakthrough for Brussels and London, which have so far been excluded from the process.
High security officials from France and Germany will also take part in the talks.
Politico emphasized that "Ukraine's allies are seeking to rewrite Trump's proposal, which they believe will be favorable to Russia."
"The fact that the Europeans will get a seat at the negotiating table will be welcomed in Kiev, Brussels and beyond, after Ukraine's allies expressed concern about being excluded from Trump's latest initiative," the publication wrote.
The talks will be held at the level of national security advisers. The EU is expected to be represented by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's right-hand man Bjorn Seibert and Pedro Lurti, a top aide to European Council President Antonio Costi.
Among other things, the Europeans are expected to press the Trump team to soften its proposal to hand over the Donbass territories to Russia.
Instead, they want any truce to be based on the principle of freezing the conflict at the current "line of contact," but only to start negotiations, not a final settlement.
The Geneva talks
Reminder, U.S. and Russian officials have developed a peace plan to end Russia's war against Ukraine. It was agreed upon by US President Donald Trump.
The plan consists of 28 points and provides, in particular, for the transfer of part of the Donbass territories to Russia in exchange for the provision of long-term security guarantees to Ukraine and the EU, the reduction of the Ukrainian army, the abandonment of long-range weapons, and others.
Europe and Ukraine were outraged by such a peace plan and urgently began preparing their own version.
The representatives of the US, the Euro-troika and Ukraine have scheduled a meeting in Geneva in the coming days to discuss the US peace plan. Zelensky promised that Ukraine would defend its interests in Switzerland.
The Ukrainian delegation to the talks will be led by the head of the Presidential Office, Andriy Yermak.
The United States will travel to Switzerland to discuss the peace plan: U.S. Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll and his team, as well as the U.S. leader's special envoy Steve Whitkoff, who actually developed the document with Russian representative Kirill Dmitriev.
It is also known that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to attend the meeting in Geneva.
