The Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany issued a statement.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz opposed Russia's return to the G8 as envisioned in the U.S. peace plan for Ukraine.
This is reported by DW.
He added that other G8 members are also against Russia's return.
"At present, I don't see that there is any willingness among the six current members of the G7, which is not America, to accept Russia back into this group," Merz said.
Merz noted that a return to the G8 format can only be agreed upon by consensus.
DW notes that French President Emmanuel Macron expressed the same view the day before. He also said that there are no prerequisites for Russia's re-admission to the G8.
Russia was excluded from the G8 in June 2014 in response to the occupation of Crimea.
The G7 now consists of the United States, Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Canada and Japan. The group is considered a club of states with the most developed economies.
