An Official Named Adolf Hitler Is Running Again In Namibia

That was the name his father gave him.

In Namibia, a local politician with the name Adolf Hitler Uunona, the leader of the Ompundya constituency, has been in the spotlight. He confirmed to BILD that he will run in the Nov. 26 regional election. Adolf Hitler Uunona has led the district since 2004 and was re-elected in 2020 with nearly 85 percent.

The pressure on the official has only grown in recent years, with residents complaining of stagnant development in the district and a lack of infrastructure. The local newspaper Namibian quoted a voter who resented, "We don't pay him to play cards at work."

Uunona attributes the name's worldwide attention to the fact that his father simply didn't understand the historical context. He emphasizes that he has nothing to do with Nazi crimes and only uses the name Adolf at public events.

Since 1884, Namibia was a German colony and was called German South West Africa. In 1915, during the First World War, Namibian territory was invaded by troops of the Union of South Africa. Namibia gained independence on March 21, 1990.
