The Pentagon gained access to Russian S-300s back in the early 1990s.
The U.S. Marine Corps (MCP) has practiced destroying Russian-made S-300 air defense (AD) systems at the Resolute Hunter 26-1 exercise held at Fallon Air Force Base in Nevada. As reported by Military Watch Magazine (MWM).
According to the Western magazine, the exercise used mock-ups similar to the Russian S-300s and likely practiced scenarios to counter them. "The mockups give units the opportunity to practice detection, target designation and engagement workflows, and often mimic the radar, visual and electromagnetic characteristics of real systems," the publication said.
It notes that Russian-made S-300 air defense systems are in service with Venezuela, Algeria and Iran, while China and North Korea have similar systems. The publication recognizes that the Pentagon gained access to Russian S-300s back in the early 1990s through Ukraine. Nevertheless, according to the magazine, modern Russian S-300s are superior to the Soviet ones.
The publication notes that the mockup of the S-300 system used in the Resolute Hunter 26-1 exercise had desert camouflage typical of Iran, Algeria and China.
