Finland Convenes EU Eastern Flank Summit

Helsinki will discuss security threats - without Hungary and Slovakia.

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has invited the leaders of seven EU member states to the bloc's Eastern Flank summit to be held in Helsinki on December 16.

The meeting will focus on threats to European security and defense, especially on the EU's eastern border.

The one-day summit of the EU's Eastern flank will be held for the first time.

The summit will be attended by Prime Ministers Ulf Kristersson (Sweden), Kristen Mihal (Estonia), Evika Silinja (Latvia), Donald Tusk (Poland) and Rosen Zhelyazkov (Bulgaria), as well as presidents Nicusor Dan (Romania) and Gitanas Nauseda (Lithuania).

It is noteworthy that the prime ministers or presidents of Hungary and Slovakia, which are also part of the EU's Eastern flank, are not among the invited leaders.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said the summit will be an opportunity to discuss security threats in depth. At the same time, countries on Europe's eastern flank will be able to further deepen cooperation on defense and border management.

The Eastern Flank Summit in Helsinki will take place on the eve of the European Council meeting in Brussels.
