Von Der Leyen: Europe United In Support Of Ukraine
Ursula von der Leyen

European Commission chief welcomed progress in peace talks.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called the talks in Geneva a "solid basis" for a further settlement of the war. European Council President Antonio Costa also spoke of "new momentum" in the dialogue, writes Deutsche Welle.

European Union leaders on Monday, November 24, welcomed progress in talks on ending Russia's war against Ukraine, but at the same time cited unresolved issues that remain despite efforts the previous day in Geneva to finalize a U.S. peace plan.

"Although the work is not yet complete, there is now a solid basis for moving forward," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on the sidelines of an EU-African Union summit in the Angolan capital Luanda.

Von der Leyen: We are united in supporting Ukraine

Speaking to reporters following an informal meeting of EU leaders, the European Commission chief urged allies to "remain united and continue to put Ukraine's interests at the center of efforts." "This is about the security of our entire continent - both today and in the future. Today's meeting in Luanda has once again confirmed that we are united in our support for Ukraine," von der Leyen emphasized.

She listed the "basic European principles" on which the EU will insist in the future: "Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty must be respected, only Ukraine, as a sovereign state, can make decisions regarding its armed forces." The EC head also added that at the summit she again raised the issue of the fate of missing and abducted Ukrainian children: "Each of them must return home."

Costa: Negotiations have "new momentum"

In his turn, European Council President António Costa said that there was "new momentum" in the peace talks. "Some issues still need to be resolved, but the direction is positive," said Costa, commenting on the meeting of representatives of Ukraine and the United States in Geneva. He noted that issues directly affecting the European Union - such as sanctions, enlargement or frozen Russian assets - "require the full involvement and resolution of the EU."

"We are ready to continue supporting this process, working in close cooperation with the EU, as well as in coordination with Ukraine, the United States and NATO," the European Council chief stressed.
