The U.S. Marines used S-300 and HQ-9 mockups in the exercise.
Resolute Hunter 26-1 exercise was held, during which full-scale mock-ups of foreign-made air defense systems similar to the S-300 and HQ-9 were spotted.
According to Defence Blog, the decoys were painted in desert camouflage, which is commonly associated with Iranian troops. It has been noted that the U.S. military continues to use realistic replicas of Chinese and Russian air defense systems, as well as other foreign military equipment, to train crews for future conflicts.
"The appearance of S-300 and HQ-9 mock-ups in Iranian-style camouflage shows that a wide range of potential adversaries are being considered. These systems are operated by several countries, and the mockups allow the U.S. military to study both different camouflage schemes and methods of deployment and detection," the publication wrote.
Ukrainian resource Militarnyy reported that the chassis of the mockup used by the U.S. military mimics the MZKT-7930. It is on it that the S-400 SAM system is based. Probably, the same mockups were used to imitate the Chinese HQ-9 because of the similarity with Russian installations.
"But the mockup's radar is similar to the 30N6 from the S-300 SAM system because of the shape of the upper part of the canvas. Such surrogates reproduce radar signatures, sensor data and tactics typical of Russian and Chinese systems," the report said.
