EU And Africa Open New Partnership Opportunities

It is about economic cooperation, trade and investment.

The European Union (EU) and African Union (AU) states consider it important to have closer cooperation between the two continents. "Looking to the future, we are determined to further develop our partnership and open up new opportunities," reads a joint EU-AU declaration issued on Tuesday, November 25, following a two-day summit in Angola's capital Luanda.

The document focuses on cooperation in the economy, trade and investment. The declaration also cited the parties' previous commitments to finance climate change and promote renewable energy in Africa, DW reports.

The two organizations stressed the need to resolve conflicts around the world. "We reaffirm our unwavering support for a just, comprehensive and lasting peace in Ukraine, the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Sahel, Somalia and other wars and conflicts around the world," the joint statement said.

The European and African Unions expressed "deep concern" about the situation in Sudan's North Darfur province. "We condemn the atrocities committed in El Fasher following the recent seizure of the town by the Rapid Response Force (RSF) and call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid throughout the country," the declaration said.

The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to democracy, good governance, the rule of law, human rights and freedom of the media. However, as the dpa news agency notes, the statement made no mention of ongoing human rights violations, the treatment of political opponents in many African states, violence in suppressing protests, or the criminalization of homosexuals in almost all African countries.
