Trump's special envoy gave advice to Putin's aide on how to do it.
U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Whitkoff effectively derailed the delivery of Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine by giving advice to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov.
This is reported by The Wall Street Journal.
The publication notes that from the leaked recording of the conversation between Whitkoff and Ushakov it became known, the special envoy of the U.S. president did literally everything possible to prevent Ukraine from being given cruise missiles. In particular, Whitkoff advised the Russian to make Putin congratulate Trump on reaching a peace agreement in the Gaza Strip.
It was also Whitkoff who was the author of the idea to arrange a phone conversation between Trump and Putin before the visit of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to the White House. We already know where Whitkoff's actions led.
"Zelensky went to Washington hoping that Trump would authorize the transfer of long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, a weapon that would put many Russian targets in Kiev's crosshairs. But during a conversation on October 16, Putin warned Trump that sending Tomahawk would escalate the war and damage relations between the US and Russia, according to Ushakov," the newspaper noted.
It was after Putin's call that Trump refused to supply Ukraine with Tomahawk, refusing to "reduce the stockpile" of US missiles. The real reason for this change of position was precisely Whitkoff's actions.
