The newspaper says that shots rang out outside the presidential palace in Bissau on November 26. The country's head of state was detained in mid-afternoon.
"Umaru Sisoku Embalo himself told Jeune Afrique that he was arrested on Wednesday, November 26, around noon while he was in his office at the presidential palace. He was joined by the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, General Biage Na Ntan, his deputy, General Mamadou Toure, and Interior Minister Boche Kande," the newspaper reported.
Umaru Sisoku Embalo said no violence was used against him during the "coup d'état". He said the coup was organized by the Army Chief of Staff.
According to several sources, gunshots were heard in the afternoon near the palace and outside the election commission building. Men in uniform also took up positions on the main road leading to the presidential residence.
The Guinea-Bissau presidential election was held on Sunday, November 23. The vote was held quietly but without the main opposition leader Domingues Simões Simões Pereira, who was not allowed to run. The incumbent president claimed to have won with 65% of the vote, based on his own count.
Official results are due to be published on November 27.
