Argentina Nominates IAEA Chief Grossi As Candidate For UN Secretary General

Argentina's foreign minister explained the choice.
On Wednesday, the Argentine government officially presented the candidacy of current IAEA chief Rafael Grossi for the post of future UN secretary-general.
The Europa press reports.
"I am honored and privileged to present today the candidacy of Rafael Grossi for the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations," Argentine Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno wrote in X.
He stressed that Grossi "has had a distinguished career" that has spanned more than 40 years as an official in Argentina's diplomatic corps, most recently at the helm of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Kirno added that Grossi's leadership skills were recognized when he was elected to a second term as IAEA chief in 2023.
"His deep knowledge of the multilateral system, his ability to facilitate diplomatic dialogue, his proven effectiveness in situations of conflict and serious international crises as an impartial and effective interlocutor, his technical and linguistic competence, as well as his commitment to the UN Charter make him an excellent candidate," the minister summarized.
According to Europa press, Grossi was nominated as a candidate for the post of UN Secretary General for the period from 2027 to 2031. Argentina did so as part of an open process to elect António Guterres' successor to the post.
What is known about Grossi
Rafael Grossi has a master's degree in political science, a master's degree in international relations and a doctorate in history and international politics.
Before taking up the post of IAEA Director General, he served as deputy head of the agency from 2010 to 2013, when it was headed by Yukiya Amano of Japan.
Grossi was also Argentina's ambassador to Austria for 6 years - (from 2013 to 2019) during the presidencies of Cristina Fernández li Kirchner and Mauricio Macri.
