As early as next year.
Nearly 30 years after the abolition of conscription, French President Emmanuel Macron has announced the reinstatement of military service amid risks of a new armed conflict in Europe over Russian aggression.
The new program Macron unveiled Thursday during a visit to an infantry brigade stationed in the French Alps, France24 reported.
"The new national service will be gradually introduced starting next summer," the president said. It will be voluntary, with young people aged 18 and 19 serving for 10 months. The program aims to recruit 10,000 recruits by 2030.
There are no plans to bring back compulsory conscription, which was abolished in 1996. Young volunteers will serve only on French territory and will not be sent on military operations abroad, Macron said. His statement was made against the backdrop of Paris' plans to lead, together with Britain, a peacekeeping contingent to be deployed in Ukraine if hostilities cease there. At the same time, Macron sought to defuse tensions caused by last week's statement by Chief of General Staff Fabien Mandon. He said France should be prepared to "lose its children" as Russia "prepares to confront our countries by 2030."
Mandon's statement drew sharp criticism among French politicians. At the same time, European military and intelligence officials have repeatedly claimed that Russia could attack NATO countries before the end of this decade.
