The EU will make a significant contribution to security guarantees for Ukraine by providing it with funding, training and support for its defense industry. This was stated by EU diplomatic chief Kaja Kallas on November 26 following an informal video conference of the Foreign Affairs Council.
The transcript of the press conference was published by the European External Action Service.
According to Kallas, security guarantees for Ukraine do not change the fact that the real threat is Russia.
"Over the last 100 years, Russia has attacked more than 19 countries, some of them even three or four times. None of these countries has ever attacked Russia. Therefore, in any peace agreement, we must focus on how to get the Russian side to stop aggression for good and not to change borders by force," the European diplomat emphasized.
As Callas pointed out, there are rarely wars in the world where the situation is "so unambiguous."
"We have one aggressor and one victim. The focus should be on what Russia - the aggressor - should do, not on what Ukraine - the victim - should sacrifice," the EU diplomatic chief said.
Callas also stressed the importance of respecting the principles of sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and Ukraine's inalienable right to self-defense.
