Ukraine has begun using a domestically produced ballistic missile in combat operations.
President Vladimir Zelensky has announced that Ukraine has begun using the domestically-made Sapsan ballistic missile in combat operations. This is an important breakthrough: the country has long sought a weapon capable of hitting targets deep inside Russia without any foreign restrictions, writes TWZ.
"We are already using the Neptun, the long-range Neptun, the Palyanitsa, the Flamingo. And also, frankly speaking, the 'Sapsan' - we have started using it," Zelensky said, without specifying the number of missiles and the direction of their use.
"We don't want the enemy to know all the precedents and all the details," he added.
There is no independent confirmation yet that the Sapsan was actually used in combat. Russia has claimed to have shot down Ukrainian ballistic missiles over Crimea, but no proof has been provided. At the same time, the use of such weapons fits logically into Ukraine's course of increasing its own missile production and ability to strike at greater depth.
What is known about Ukraine's Peregrine Falcon
The Peregrine Falcon is closely linked to the Grom-2 missile program. It is estimated to have a range of 280 to 500 kilometers, and according to Ukrainian Defense Ministry statements, even up to 1,000 kilometers. This makes the missile potentially Ukraine's most powerful means of striking targets behind Russian lines.
Before this, Ukraine had only Soviet Tochka and Tochka-U missiles with a maximum range of up to 120 kilometers, as well as a limited number of U.S. ATACMS, which cannot be used on Russian territory.
A ballistic missile of its own production would give Ukraine a new defeat tool, more difficult to intercept due to its high speed and suitable for strikes against fortified targets. Analysts expect that in case of mass production, the effect could be comparable to the impact of using ATACMS, which have already forced Russia to change logistics and move additional air defense.
"The value of such a weapon for the Ukrainian military is undeniable, as it provides a powerful new vector for carrying out strikes against Russia without any foreign restrictions. Provided it is used promptly, we will probably not have to wait long for positive confirmation of this," the publication concluded.
