Russian Archaeologist Detained In Poland

At the request of Ukraine.

Russian archaeologist and Hermitage employee Alexander Butyagin has been detained in Poland, RMF FM reports. This was done at the request of Ukraine, which accuses the scientist of illegal excavations in annexed Crimea that caused damage of 200 million hryvnias.

Butyagin was sent under arrest for 40 days. Kiev will demand his extradition in the case of the destruction of the cultural heritage site, the Ancient City of Myrmekia in Kerch. Ukraine has been searching for the scientist since November this year, where he faces up to ten years in prison.

Butyagin heads the department of ancient archaeology at the Hermitage. According to the radio station, the scientist was in Poland on a passing trip - on his way from the Netherlands, where he was conducting a series of lectures, to one of the Balkan countries. The Kremlin called Butyagin's detention in Poland a "legal arbitrariness".
