Russia's Bomber Fleet Is Falling Apart

The RF is not able to make up for the losses quickly.

Russian strategic aviation is facing unprecedented difficulties resulting from a combination of accidental accidents and targeted strikes by Ukraine, writes 19FortyFive (translated by Charter97.org).

In early 2025, a tragedy occurred at an airbase. Due to a technical malfunction, the ejection seats malfunctioned, killing both crew members. This case emphasized the vulnerability of Russian bombers even on their own territory.

The situation was further complicated by Operation Spider's Web, directed against Russia's strategic airbases. As part of this operation, hundreds of small drones hit key facilities, including Tu-22M3s, Tu-95s, Tu-160s and A-50s. Many of the planes were already fueled for long-range strikes, increasing the severity of the strike. According to various estimates, between 10 and 40 aircraft were damaged or destroyed, a major blow to the aging fleet of strategic bombers.

Russian aircraft, despite the massive losses, remain a platform for long-range strikes, but are now forced to operate from a safe distance to reduce the risk of being hit by Ukrainian drones and missiles. Aging equipment and limited replacement capabilities make the situation critical: many of the planes were built during the Cold War era, and Russia is unable to quickly make up for the losses.

The Ukrainian operation has also demonstrated the effectiveness of small drones and modern counter-aircraft techniques. This forces the Russian command to look for new tactics and limit the use of aircraft on the front line, which reduces the strategic capabilities of the VKS.

Despite the joint exercises with China and the partial combat readiness of the fleet, experts believe that 2025 will be an extremely dangerous year for Russian bomber pilots. Losses and threats from Ukraine continue to weaken one of the key elements of Russia's strategic power.
