Lithuania Prepares Its Own Sanctions Against Lukashenko's Regime

Vilnius is also ready to close the border with Belarus again.

The Lithuanian government is considering imposing national sanctions against Belarus or re-closing the border, but will first seek a solution with the support of allies, the country's Prime Minister Inga Ruginenene told LRT in an interview.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively working at the level of the European Commission with the full support of the Commission on a new package of sanctions," she said.

"I have already spoken with the U.S. special envoy for Belarus [John Cole We will also discuss joint actions with our strategic partners," Ruginenė added.

The politician said that if this does not help, national sanctions and border closures will be "seriously considered".

She noted that the number of balloon infiltrations was minimal when Lithuania closed its border with Belarus for several weeks in late October.
