Zhelyazkov's cabinet resigned under pressure from the street.
Bulgaria's government led by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov announced his resignation on Thursday, December 11, amid the massive anti-government protests that have recently engulfed the country, Nova.bg reports Nova.bg.
According to Zhelyazkov, the government coalition met to discuss "the challenges we face and the decisions we have to make."
"Now, as required by the Co We hear the voice of citizens protesting the ruling. The young, the old, people of different ethnicities have spoken in favor of resignation. We support the energy of the society, encourage it," he said.
The head of the government said his team managed to achieve Bulgaria's accession to the eurozone, ensure macroeconomic stability and achieve "unprecedented income growth".
"The draft budget we proposed was focused on social protection and increasing the purchasing power of citizens. It seems that this could not be fully explained or our opponents could not understand it. The protest was against complacency and arrogance, against the way democratic values are realized. That is why the government resigned," Zhelyazkov added.
The resignation came after six votes of no confidence from the opposition and thousands of people protested in a number of localities in Bulgaria and abroad. The demonstrations began as an expression of dissatisfaction with the draft budget, which for the first time was drawn up in euros.
