Russia uses Belarus' mobile network to control drones.
Russia is using the mobile network of Belarus to control "Shaheds" during massive strikes on Ukraine.
This was reported by Ukrainian military radio technology specialist Sergei Flesh, who works with the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
He said Russian telecom operators provide modems in the drones with special SIM cards that work roaming specifically in Belarus. Thanks to this, Russian UAVs retain data transmission when entering the Ukrainian airspace.
Russian SIM cards do not function in Ukraine, but access to the Belarusian networks gives the "Shaheds" the ability to keep the data channel for several dozen kilometers deeper into Ukrainian territory. According to the expert, checking the state of the modem, for example, whether the drone has been shot down or not, is possible even at a distance of up to 90 kilometers.
The only working option to counter this threat is to destroy Russian base stations at the border, whose antennas are directed towards Ukraine. At the same time, the Ukrainian army does not attack the towers on the territory of Belarus.
"If we prove that the border mobile stations in Belarus are used by the "Shaheds," which is quite realistic to do by means of REB, we can with a clear conscience jam the receiving frequencies of these stations with REB from our territory during the alarms," wrote the expert.
It recently became known that the Russians are testing SIM-cards of different countries in Turkey on the territory of hotels. The expert explained that in this way they check the speed of data transfer, the time of registration in the Network, possible delays, the work of VPN-channels and algorithms that track changes in IMEI. He emphasized that the purpose of such experiments is precisely technical assessment of the quality of communication.
Flesh reminded that Ukraine has long been struggling with modems and SIM cards embedded in "Shaheds". According to him, operators and law enforcement agencies are conducting a large-scale invisible work that helps to reduce the effectiveness of Russian strikes. Ukraine already has extensive experience in countering both Russian SIM cards and cards from other countries, which are also found in downed drones. The expert suggested that Russia's new experiments may be related to preparations for the use of similar trackers on drones that will operate on the territory of the European Union countries.
