The missiles have a range of up to 500 kilometers.
In August 2022, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine for the first time signed a state contract for the purchase of the 1KR1 Sapsan operational-tactical missile system. And already this year it went into systematic use, and production became serial.
The enemy first felt the effect of this weapon in 2024. This was told by Alexander Liev, deputy head of the Department of State Procurement of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine in 2022-2023.
"In August 2022, leading the department of military-technical policy, development of weapons and military equipment of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, I took the responsibility to conclude the first state contract with SE KB Yuzhnoye for the purchase of the newest operational-tactical missile system 1KR1 "Sapsan". I developed, concluded and signed the state contract, ensured prepayment. Then - control of implementation, meetings, resources, deadlines, coordination of a large cooperation that stretched across the country," he wrote.

Liev said that in 2023, the first tests of the missile defense system took place, in 2024 - the first test applications against Russian targets.
"I sincerely rejoice at being involved in the real strengthening of our AFU.... This is oh so good!" For a ballistic missile defense system, this pace is colossal!" - Liev noted.
What is the Peregrine missile defense system
This is a Ukrainian operational-tactical missile system of the new generation. The ballistic missile of solid-fuel type has a high-precision guidance system.
Main tactical and technical characteristics of the weapon:
- Strike range: up to 500 km.
- Missile mass: ~3,500 kg
- Mass of the warhead: 500 kg.
- Flight speed: up to 2,300 m/s (Mach 7)
- Probable deflection (CEP): Up to 10 m
- Guidance system:
- inertial;
- satellite correction;
- several types of homing heads developed by Yuzhny (optoelectronic, radar - for different types of targets).

The time of preparation for launch is less than 10 minutes, the time of folding after launch - 4 minutes.
This is the closest system to the modern world missile defense systems, created inside Ukraine and fully controlled by the state.
Why it is important for the AFU
The depth of impact of the Sapsan missile defense system is up to 500 km. This makes it possible to hit the enemy's rear bases, command posts, air bases, logistics.
The weapon has high accuracy - the MTCR does not work "area-wise", but addresses targets important to Ukraine.
This weapon is a sovereign technology.
"No 'permits' from partners, no restrictions on MTCR for domestic use. Ukraine itself decides when and where its missile operates," Liev noted.
Now the MTCR is already in mass production, it is a real industrial series. In addition, the price is favorable enough to distinguish the Peregrine from its NATO counterparts.
