It's already a compromise.
Ukraine initially wanted to get security guarantees in the form of NATO membership to avoid a repeated attack by Russia. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky told this in a conversation with journalists, UNIAN
"Such a direction some partners from the United States and Europe did not support. And that's why today bilateral security guarantees between Ukraine and the United States, namely Article 5-like guarantees from the U.S. for us, and security guarantees from European colleagues for us, as well as other countries - Canada, Japan, etc., these security guarantees for us are an opportunity so that another round of Russian aggression does not start. And this is already a compromise from our side," Zelensky said.
Earlier that the United States offers to provide Ukraine with guarantees on the basis of Article 5 of NATO, Axios journalists reported. At the same time, according to the publication, Washington is still asking Kiev to leave the controlled territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions to reach an agreement. In particular, the US suggests that Ukraine hold a referendum on a peace agreement that provides for the ceding of territory.
"We want to provide Ukrainians with security guarantees, which, on the one hand, will not be a blank check, and on the other hand, will be strong enough. We are ready to send it to Congress for a vote," the US official said.
