The U.S. president is demanding an end to the hostilities between the countries.

US President Donald Trump has threatened Cambodia and Thailand with new duties if the countries do not stop fighting. He said this in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

"I said: "If you fight, I will not only cancel our trade deal, but I will impose duties on your countries," the White House chief said in a phone call with the two leaders.

Trump called tariffs "an effective tool" of his foreign policy. He added that it would be "terrible" if the United States Supreme Court found some of the duties he imposed illegal.

On Dec. 13, Thai Prime Minister Anuthin Chanvirakoon said his country would continue fighting on its border with Cambodia.

The escalation of fighting in the Thai-Cambodian border areas occurred over the weekend and is still ongoing.

On December 8, Thailand accused Cambodia of attacking civilian areas in Buriram province. Shortly before that, Thailand and Cambodia struck each other in the border area. The incident came after an attack on Thailand's Anupong base that injured the kingdom's military. In response, Thailand deployed F-16 fighter jets that struck Cambodian artillery near Chong An Ma.

On Dec. 10, U.S. President Donald Trump said he plans to once again halt the armed conflict between the countries.
