A reason has been given.
The launch of the Proton-M launch vehicle, scheduled for December 15 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, had to be postponed, Roscosmos said. "During scheduled pre-launch checks of all systems, a localized discrepancy in the upper stage was diagnosed," the state corporation said. The launch has been postponed "to eliminate the deficiencies." According to Deputy Director General of "Roscosmos" Ivan Danilov, "the work front has already been determined".
The issue is with the upper stage of the DM type produced by the rocket and space corporation (RSC) "Energia". "Proton-M was to send the Elektro-L hydrometeorological satellite into orbit from Baikonur for the last time. "All subsequent launches of upper stages produced by Energia will be performed only from Vostochny and Plesetsk cosmodromes," the state corporation reported earlier. The Proton rocket has been in operation since the mid-1960s. In the future, it is to be replaced by Angara family rockets.
On November 27, the only launch table for Russian manned missions was damaged at Baikonur during the launch of the Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft to the International Space Station. In particular, there was a collapse of the maintenance cabin. Roscosmos promised to restore the site "in the near future."
Experts noted that as a result of the accident, Russia lost the ability to send people into space, which has not happened since 1961. According to their estimates, launches of Soyuz and Progress spacecraft are "postponed indefinitely" because there is no other launch table, and it is practically impossible to build a new one under current conditions.
On November 12, Roscosmos showed footage of the arrival at Baikonur of the newest Soyuz-5 launch vehicle manufactured at the Samara-based Progress RSC. It is designed to send automatic spacecraft into near-Earth orbits within the framework of the Russian-Kazakh project Baiterek. The state corporation announced the first launch later this year.
