German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said that Russian President Vladimir Putin is interested in restoring the Soviet Union to its former borders. He shared his opinion at the CDU/CSU party congress, which was broadcast on YouTube.

The chancellor believes that Russia's dictator is interested in a "fundamental change of borders in Europe" and restoring the Soviet Union to its former borders.

"This poses a huge threat, including a military threat, to the countries that were once part of this empire," Merz said.
