Three Americans were killed in the Syrian Palmyra in an attack by the terrorist group "Islamic State" (ISIS): two servicemen and a civilian interpreter, three more were wounded, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said. He specified that the attack occurred during a mission initiated as part of operations to combat ISIL and terrorism in the region. An investigation is underway.
Americans were killed Dec. 13 in an ambush by a lone ISIL militant, the U.S. Central Command of the Armed Forces (CENTCOM) added. The attacker was killed by allied forces during a firefight, noted Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth. "Keep in mind, if you attack Americans -- anywhere in the world -- you will spend the rest of your short and anxiety-filled life knowing that the United States will hunt you down, find you and mercilessly kill you," he emphasized. US President Donald Trump promised ISIS "serious retaliation". He added that the attack took place "in a very dangerous area" that is not fully controlled by the new authorities and "Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara is extremely outraged and concerned about this attack."
The ambusher was a member of the Syrian security forces, three local officials told Reuters. A spokesman for the Arab republic's Interior Ministry said the attacker did not hold a senior position and could "hold extremist views."
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani said the republic "strongly condemns the terrorist attack targeting a joint Syrian-U.S. anti-terrorism patrol near Palmyra." He also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and to the U.S. government and people.
