Finnish Prime Minister: Russia Is A Threat Today, Tomorrow And In The Long Future
Petteri Orpo

Helsinki is convening a summit of EU Eastern flank countries.

A group of EU countries territorially close to Russia will next week start working on specific measures to strengthen defense capabilities amid the threat from Moscow. This was announced by Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo on December 14, he was quoted by Bloomberg.

Orpo told Yle on air that Helsinki will host an Eastern Flank summit on December 16 with the leaders of Sweden, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania and Bulgaria.

The Finnish prime minister said that "Russia is a threat today, tomorrow and in the long future," and "the greatest pressure is on Europe's eastern fringes."

Orpo noted that the leaders of the Eastern Flank summit countries plan to "send a clear message to Brussels" and receive funds for defense projects - €1.5 billion to start with.

Once next year, however, spending in the EU's multi-year budget could reach €135 billion, the Finnish prime minister said.

Orpo informed that the Eastern Flank group of countries intends to receive funding for improving border security, air defense, detecting and countering drones, as well as developing ground forces.
