EU Extends Sanctions Against The Belarusian Regime

Because of the hybrid attacks on Lithuania.

The European Union expands sanctions against Belarus because of hybrid attacks on Lithuania, according to Radio Svaboda. These measures were a response to regular launches of weather probes with contraband from the territory of Belarus.

The Council of the EU adopted a new criterion for imposing sanctions on companies and individuals who "benefit from, are attracted to or contribute to actions or policies associated with the Lukashenko regime against democracy, the rule of law, stability or security in the EU and its member states."

The EU's readiness to extend sanctions was announced by Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kjastutis Budrys on the morning of December 15.

According to "Radio Svaboda," Lithuania is pushing for several new sanctions against Belarus, including:

A complete ban on transactions for 10 Belarusian banks.

Sanctions against nitrogen fertilizers in addition to the previously imposed sanctions against potash.

Ban on imports of Belarusian rapeseed oil and salt.

Because of weather probes flying from Belarus, a state of emergency was introduced in Lithuania, and on the territory of the whole country. This decision was explained by the fact that the probes pose a threat to civil aviation (because of them, airports in Vilnius and Kaunas work with interruptions). In addition, according to Interior Minister Vladislav Kondratovich, the probes pose a threat to "national security".
